The
RYA Competetent Crew Course is a fun, hands on course designed to introduce the non-sailor to sailing and living on board a cruising yacht.
This course is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers. Virtually all the course is hands on. You are the crew – without you the sails won’t go up and the boat won’t be steered!
There is no expectation of knowledge, so if you are joining an RYA Competent Crew Course you can rest assured that we will look after you every step of the way. The course is delivered by one of our specially selected, experienced RYA Sailing Instructors. The syllabus includes:
- Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a boat, her rigging and sails
- Sail handling
- Ropework
- Fire precautions and fighting
- Personal safety equipment
- Man overboard procedures
- Emergency equipment
- Basic Meteorology
- Seasickness
- Helmsmanship
- General duties
- Manners and customs
- Rules of the road
By the end of the course you should be able to confidently steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines expected of the crew of a small cruising yacht. You will also have some great stories to take home with you.
