Helmsman - Motor

Assumed knowledge: None

Course content: Boat preparation, boat handling, types of crafts, engines and drives, engine operation and maintenance, safety and seamanship, rules of the road, securing to a buoy, berthing alongside, man overboard recovery

Ability after the course: Competent to handle a motor cruiser of a specific type in sheltered waters

Min duration: 2 Days

Minimum age: 12

The RYA Helmsman course is a two-day fun introductory course to motor cruising for complete beginners

Day Skipper Motor

Pre-course experience: 2 days practical experience on a motor cruiser
Assumed knowledge: Theory to a level of Day Skipper. It is recommended that you attend the Day Skipper Shorebased Course before taking this practical course

Course content: Preparation for sea, boat handling, navigation, pilotage, passage making, meteorology, rules of the road, engines, emergency situations, night cruising
Ability after the course: Able to skipper a motor cruiser in familiar waters by day
Min duration: 4 Days
Minimum age: 16

Coastal Skipper - Motor

Pre-course experience: 15 days, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles, 8 night hours

Assumed knowledge: Boat handling to the standard of the Day Skipper practical motor cruising course and navigation to the standard of the Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster shorebased course

Course content: Passage planning, preparation for sea, pilotage, passage making and ability as a skipper, radar, boat handling, adverse weather conditions, emergency situations

Ability after the course: Able to skipper a motor cruiser on coastal passages by day and night

Min duration: 5 Days

Minimum age: 17
