Description
AEC1 Course Overview
Are you looking to break into the superyacht engineering department? Or perhaps you are a skipper tired of relying on mechanics for every minor engine issue?
The MCA Approved Engine Course 1 (AEC1) is your essential starting point.
At Palma Sea School, we believe the only way to learn engineering is to get your hands dirty. That’s why our course balances essential classroom theory with rigorous practical workshops. Under the guidance of our expert marine engineers, you will strip down components, trace fuel systems, and learn the “why” and “how” of diesel engine maintenance.
Who is this course for?
- Aspiring Engineers: This is the first mandatory step on the ladder to becoming a Chief Engineer.
- Deckhands: Upgrade to a “Deck/Engineer” role—one of the most sought-after and higher-paying positions in the industry.
- Yacht Owners & Skippers: Gain the peace of mind that comes with knowing how to fix a breakdown at sea.
What You Will Learn
We move beyond simple textbook learning. By the end of this week, you will understand the anatomy of a diesel engine and the systems that keep it alive.
The Diesel Engine Core
- Operation: The 4-stroke cycle and compression ignition principles.
- Construction: How engines are built and the function of internal components.
- Combustion: Optimizing air and fuel ratios for performance.
Vital Systems Maintenance
- Fuel Systems: Bleeding lines, changing filters, and fault-finding.
- Cooling & Lubrication: Preventing overheating and engine wear.
- Electrics: Basics of alternators, batteries, and starting circuits.
Power & Safety
- Drive Train: Gearboxes, shafting, and propellers.
- Legislation: MARPOL (Pollution prevention) and Safe Working Practices.
- Safety: Bottled LPG installations and workshop safety.
Why Train with Palma Sea School?
- Central Location: We are located right on the Paseo Marítimo. Walk to class from your boat or crew house—no taxis required.
- Expert Tuition: Our instructors are seasoned engineers with decades of sea time. They teach you real-world troubleshooting, not just how to pass an exam.
- Beginner Friendly: We assume zero prior knowledge. We provide a supportive environment where you can ask questions and learn at your own pace.
Prerequisites & Exam
- Experience: None required.
- Age: Minimum 18 years old.
- Assessment: The course is assessed through continuous practical observation and a final written exam on the last day.
Ready to level up?
Upon completion of the AEC1, you will be eligible to take the AEC2 (Approved Engine Course 2), which covers advanced hotel systems like refrigeration and hydraulics, completing your full AEC qualification.
