What is the RYA Day Skipper Motor course?

The RYA Day Skipper Motor is a 4 day training course teaching essentials such as pilotage, navigation, seamanship and boat handling to the standard required to skipper a small cruising yacht up to 24 meters safely by day in (non tidal) waters with which the student is familiar.

This is very much a hands-on course with little time to teach navigation or other theoretical subjects. It is therefore recommended that you take the Day Skipper Shorebased theory course prior to your practical course so you can put those skills into practice on the water.

Course content

The course includes preparation for sea, deck work, navigation, pilotage, meterology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, victualling, passage planning and emergency situation, yacht handling under power

Pre-course experience / requirements

  • 2 days practical experience on a motor cruiser
  • Assumed knowledge: Theory to a level of Day Skipper.

So whats next?
