RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Sail – 5-Day Practical Exam Preparation (& exam)
Are You Ready to Become a Yachtmaster?
It’s essential to understand that within the RYA Sail and Motor Cruising scheme, there is no dedicated Yachtmaster course. Instead, most training centres, including us, offer Yachtmaster Exam Preparation Training to refine your skills before taking the official RYA examination.
Who Should Take This Course?
Our Yachtmaster Preparation Training is designed for experienced skippers who already meet all the prerequisites required for the Yachtmaster exam (see below). To participate, you should:
✅ Be a competent skipper, capable of handling a motor yacht in close-quarters and at sea.
✅ Have thorough navigational knowledge, equivalent to the RYA Yachtmaster Theory Course, and have applied this knowledge in real-world conditions, including day and night passages.
✅ Have the minimum sea time and experience required to sit the Yachtmaster exam (see eligibility criteria below).
This intensive training is designed to fine-tune your existing skills, assess your strengths and weaknesses, and prepare you for the exam with an independent RYA examiner.
📌 If you opt for the one-week practical preparation course only, we strongly recommend that you have already completed the RYA Yachtmaster shorebased course to ensure your theoretical knowledge is at the required level. You will be unlikely to pass the final exam without it.
Yachtmaster Exam Eligibility Criteria
To take the Yachtmaster Offshore Motor exam, you must meet the following experience requirements:
📍 Sea Time & Miles:
- 50 days at sea
- 2,500 miles logged on yachts up to 500 GT
- 5 passages over 60 miles, including:
- 2 overnight passages
- 2 as skipper
- 5 days as skipper on vessels under 24m LOA
- At least 50% of sea time must be gained in tidal waters
- All sea time must be within the last 10 years
📍 Additional Requirements:
- Navigation skills at the level of the Yachtmaster Coastal/Yachtmaster shore-based course
- Valid VHF Certificate
- Valid First Aid Certificate
📍 For Commercial Endorsement:
- Sea Survival Certificate
- ENG1 Medical
- Online PPR Course (RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities)
⚠️ You will not be permitted to take the exam without meeting these requirements. You are not required to provide proof of miles, but you will need to submit a sea miles log to the examiner before the test.
📌 Your qualifying sea time must have been gained within the last 10 years, and the type of vessel must match the qualification you are applying for (e.g., Yachtmaster Sail candidates must log miles on a sailing yacht, not a motor yacht).
